Unlike Other Royals, Prince Harry Has Chosen to Wear a Wedding Ring

As most married women throughout Western countries do, both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle wear wedding rings on their left ring fingers. But unlike Prince William, Prince Harry has also chosen to wear a wedding ring, breaking precedent and tradition.

Certainly, in Britain, Canada, and the United States, men — like women — wear wedding bands. For the British Royal Family, however, men’s rings are not the tradition.

Forgoing Diamond Rings

In Canada and America, forgoing wedding rings is quite uncommon for married couples. Even those who prefer not to wear silver or gold jewelry as their wedding rings will wear a workout-friendly rubber ring or get a tattoo on their left ring finger.

But in Great Britain, the tradition is not as familiar. Women tend to wear diamond rings for engagements and weddings, but men — and especially aristocrats — tend to avoid diamond rings or any types of men’s rings for their nuptials altogether.

Prince Charles, the father of William and Harry, for example, wears a ring on his pinky finger as a sign of his marriage to his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. And he also wore a traditional men’s ring during his marriage to the boys’ mother, Princess Diana. On the other hand, the Duke of Edinburgh — husband to Queen Elizabeth — has never worn men’s rings of any kind — to show his marriage to Queen Elizabeth or for any other reason. As for Prince William, rumor has it that he chose not to wear a ring simple because he does not like to wear jewelry.

Prince Harry’s Choice About Men’s Diamond Rings for His Wedding

As to why Prince Harry decided to wear a wedding ring unlike his grandfather and brother, the answer is uncertain. Most sources claim that it was simply the preference of Prince Harry to find one of the most expensive men’s rings for himself and of course a luxurious engagement ring with beautiful types of diamonds for Meghan — plus her wedding band. It might also be because Meghan is American, and wearing men’s rings for a wedding ceremony is more of an American tradition.

But in the end, both Harry and Meghan did exchange rings at their wedding ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor on May 19th, 2018. At the “giving of the rings” during the ceremony, Harry first placed a ring on Meghan’s finger, and then she put a ring on his finger.

Both of the beautiful rings were made by Cleave and Company, court jewelers. Prince Harry had one of the most expensive men’s rings in the country, made of platinum gold. His bride, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, had a ring made of Welsh gold. Royal British brides wearing Welsh gold is a tradition.

Meghan’s engagement ring (one of the most beautiful diamond rings in existence!) was designed by Harry himself. The diamond ring features a yellow gold band, which was apparently Meghan’s preference, as well as one of the most special types of diamonds in the world: A Botswanan diamond.

The Botswanan diamond is the central stone. Sources say that Harry chose this diamond because Botswana was one of the first places that he and Meghan visited as a couple. The ring also features two extra diamonds from his late mother, Princess Diana’s, private jewelry collection.

Getting Married? Follow Prince Harry’s Lead

All men who are getting married — whether Canadian, American, British, or any other nationality — should wear wedding bands for marriage ceremonies and men’s diamond rings for engagements. These men’s diamond rings and wedding bands are symbols of promise, and they represent a tradition that is highly valued throughout the world.

Prince Harry realized this, and that’s why he chose to wear his own wedding ring as a symbol of commitment and love to Meghan.

Ready to Find Your Own Expensive Men’s Rings? Use This Guide

Harry’s ring is expensive, luxurious, and made with quality and longevity in mind. Naturally, that’s because he’s a prince!

But your wedding ring or engagement ring can be made with the same quality and attention to detail as well — and it should be. Getting married to the love of your life is probably the biggest event that will take place in your life. Make this day count by choosing a ring that is worthy of the occasion.

The best wedding and engagement rings for men are diamond rings, so here are some guidelines to consider when choosing men’s rings with diamonds.

  1. Let your personality be your guide.

Do you dress subtly with basic, neutral colors and not a lot of patterns or loud designs? Go with a ring that’s simple and understated like the Rotante Gobbe Diamond Ring from Sauro.

On the other hand, if you’re more of an animated personality and enjoy wearing loud clothing and accessories that speak to your mood and vibrancy, go with something that fits the bill. For more pizzazz, try the Rotante Ingranaggio Diamond Ring.

  1. Consider black diamonds.

Unlike white diamonds, black diamonds offer more of a manly style. Black diamond rings offer sparkle and shine, but they’re often seen as more masculine than their white diamond counterparts. We love this basic, one-row Rotante Octagonal Diamond Ring from Sauro or the wider Rotante Octagonal Diamond Ring with five rows of stunning black diamonds — also from Sauro.

  1. Consider choosing men’s diamond rings from Sauro Jewelry.
